(S)-3-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone CAS:7331-52-4 is activated through reaction with sulfonyl chloride, ring opened in acid water solution and produced in alkali solution into (R)-3,4-poxy butyrate, which is then reacted with 25% concentration water solution of trimethylamine to produce L-carnitine. (S)-3-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone CAS:7331-52-4 could miscible with water, alcohol and other organic solvent. Immiscible with light petroleum.
