Due to its good viscosity and hygroscopicity, propylene glycol is widely used as hygroscopic agent, antifreeze agent, lubricant and solvent in food, medicine and cosmetics industries. In food industry, propylene glycol reacts with fatty acid to form propylene glycol fatty acid ester, which is mainly used as food emulsifier; propylene glycol is an excellent solvent for condiment and pigment. Because of its low toxicity, propylene glycol is used as the solvent of perfume and edible pigment in the food industry. Propylene glycol is commonly used as the solvent, softener and excipient for manufacturing various kinds of ointment and ointment in the pharmaceutical industry, and as the solvent for mixing agent, preservative, ointment, vitamin, penicillin, etc. in the pharmaceutical industry.
