1,3-butanediol is used mainly in surfactants, inks, solvents for natural and synthetic flavoring agents and serves as a co-monomer in manufacturing certain polyurethane and polyester resins. It can also serve as a humectant to prevent loss of moisture in cosmetics, particularly in hair sprays and setting lotions.
1 3-Butylene Glycol is an organic compound with the molecular formula HOCH2CH2CH(OH)CH3. It''s a chiral diol. This compound is a colorless, water-soluble liquid. It is one of the four isoforms of 1 3-Butylene Glycol with stable structure. Using acetaldehyde as raw material, 3-hydroxybutanediol is formed by self-condensation in alkali solution, and then hydrogenated to 1 3-Butylene Glycol.

The ester can be used as a moisturizer and softener for cigarettes, celluloid, vellon film, paper and fiber. 3） 1 3-Butylene Glycol is also a raw material of polyester resin and alkyd resin, and a variety of monocarboxylic acid monoesters are excellent plasticizers for PVC resins and plastics. 4） 1 3-Butylene Glycol and benzene anhydride, maleic anHYDRIde and other monomers can be made into unsaturated polyester resin, with good water resistance, softness and impact resistance. 5） 1 3-Butylene Glycol is also used as an antibacterial agent in dairy and meat products because of its antibacterial properties. 6） The toxicity of 1 3-Butylene Glycol to higher animals is very low, comparable to that of glycerol, and less irritating.
