Colorless smoky liquid with strong odour and irritating to the eyes.The relative density is 1.1051(20℃), melting point is -112℃, boiling point is 51 ~ 52℃, flash point is 4.4℃(closed dish).It decomposes slowly in wet air and gives off white smoke, and hydrolyzes violently into acetic acid and hydrogen chloride when met with water, so it should be sealed and preserved.Can be miscible with benzene, acetone, trichloromethane, ether, glacial acetic acid, petroleum ether, etc.Liquid Chemicalbook is heavier than water, and vapor is heavier than air.It is chemically active and can react with many compounds.Acetyl chloride is toxic to humans because it binds to sulfhydryl groups in proteins.Important acetylation agent, better than acetic anhydride.Widely used in organic synthesis.It is also a catalyst for the chlorination of carboxylic acids.It is made from glacial acetic acid mixed with phosphorus trichloride under cold conditions, heated and distilled without hydrogen chloride.
